Oh Baby! Newborn Sessions by Kari Douma Photography!

Oh how we love babies at Kari Douma Photography! We have raised multiple babies (of our own) and photographed countless newborns over the past two decades, so we know a thing or two about photographing tiny people.

Located in Downtown Grandville, our studio specializes in getting tiny babies snuggled in just right (but we’re not sharing those secrets here!) Pretty soon they’re breathing those restful deep breaths that let us create these peaceful sleeping baby images.

We’ve been photographing the family pictured above since mom and dad were married 8 years ago at Dimnent Chapel (on the campus of Hope College).

These sweet big sisters absolutely adore their baby brothers, and we couldn’t be happier for them! It’s a joy and honor for us to create beautiful images to proudly displayed on walls for years to come.

At Kari Douma Photography, we realize the images we capture will become treasured keepsakes when these babies grow up. (Faster than mom and dad can imagine!)  That’s why we work hard to create the time and space for you to enjoy a peaceful experience.

At KDP, it’s our goal to ensure both you and your baby will be able to relax and enjoy the photography session. By allowing plenty of time, we create a calm, peaceful environment. It’s our desire to make you feel right at home.

Last month we photographed the pretty in pink, sweet newborn girl (pictured below) at our studio. Whether it’s a hot, humid summer day… or freezing Michigan winter blizzard, the weather inside our studio is always perfect. Sweltering sunshine, or gloomy blustery weather outside won’t affect our cheerful, peaceful studio space. It’s perfect every day of the year!

We have several options to capture precious images of your newborn. You can choose a full service 2 hour newborn session, or sign up for our Bebe Premier Plan (which includes 4 sessions to document baby’s first year) with extra perks and bonus gifts. Either way, we would love to meet your new bundle of joy! Call Kari to find out more: 616-437-5603

West Michigan Family Photography Sessions

West Michigan Family Photography Sessions by Kari Douma Photography

West Michigan is a beautiful location for outdoor family photography sessions! Our studio is conveniently located in Downtown Grandville, half way between Downtown Grand Rapids and the shores of Lake Michigan.

We are so fortunate to live in an area of Michigan with so many local parks, rivers, forests, fields, farms, barns, lakes and beaches. The options for gorgeous backgrounds for your family portraits are almost limitless. Grand Rapids and the surrounding areas offer a wide variety of locations. We have everything from city to country. Urban to rural. Whether you prefer rolling fields of wildflowers, or clear blue waters as far as your eyes can see, West Michigan has it all.

Late summer and early fall are the perfect time to book an outdoor family session! The weather is cooling off. The sun is setting a little earlier. Every year we have families calling for fall sessions at the end of October, but September and early October are really some of the most beautiful weeks for outdoor sessions. Don’t put off your family portraits until the end of fall!

We love to photograph families over the years, watching children grow from toddlers to teens. We  customize senior sessions for each child, then they head off to college. A few years later they become engaged and call us to photograph the wedding. When they call us to photograph their newborn babies, we are are especially excited! Watching the generations grow up right before us (and our cameras) is the best part of what we do. It’s such an honor and blessing for us to capture those fleeing moments for each family.

Let us capture your family and create beautiful memories and wall art for your home. Before you know it, you’ll blink and wonder how in the world the time went by so quickly? (Packing your children up and sending them off to college has a way to make us nostalgic! Those days of hearing their little feet padding around the house when they were little slip by much too fast). Thank you for trusting us to create those moments and memories forever.

We cherish the images, and we cherish our clients who become dear friends over the years.

St. Nicholas – Amway Grand Plaza Wedding

Rick and Lexy started their day at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel by getting ready in their suites.  It was picture perfect for their wedding day!   The sun was shining, and love was abound.  They were surrounded by friends and family as they prepared for one of the most of the important days of their lives.  Excitement filled the air while make up was applied and hair was styled. Rick and Lexy exchanged gifts (by way of family members delivering them to each other.)  After taking a few pictures in the hotel lobby, we finally headed over to the church.

Rick and Lexy exchanged their vows in the beautiful St. Nicholas Antoichian Orthodox Church in Grand Rapids.  Lexi’s brother had the honor of walking her down the isle, to give her to Rick to be his wife.  The ceremony was filled with tradition and beauty as Rick and Lexy became husband and wife!

After the ceremony we got on the limo bus and headed to downtown Grand Rapids.  We stopped at the infamous “Blue Bridge” for some fun relaxed wedding pictures in addition to one more stop.   The wedding party was full of smiles and fun as they celebrated with Rick and Lexy and therefore the pictures reflect that!

We made it back to the Amway Grand Plaza just in time for Rick and Lexy to have their reveal of their reception room.  It was absolutely stunning and also breathtaking. Every detail was perfect. Rick’s mom did a fabulous job planning all the details.  In addition to a great dinner, there were plenty of catered treats!  Finally, they danced their hearts out as the band played into the night.

Senior Photography

It’s time for senior photography again!  If you have a high school senior for the 2017-2018 school year, it is time to book that senior session!   Late summer and fall is our busiest time of year. Make sure you schedule your session before all the appointments are taken!

We love to photograph seniors and love to showcase their interest and talents.    This is the one time in their life to document who they are as they enter adulthood.   We can either showcase those talents/interests in the studio or at a location that defines your senior’s personality.

If your senior is in a fall sport, you should try to schedule your session before school starts.  Once school starts, your child will be in school during the day,  in practice after school, making it difficult to find time for that senior session.

Kari Douma Photography is a full service studio.  We start with a design consultation meeting to make a plan for your session.  The plan will include locations, clothing options, interested, and what type of products you are interested in.

The day of the session we have a ton of fun capturing your senior’s personality!  After the session we will schedule a time for you to come back into the studio, to view and order from the session.  Here you will view your images on a large projection screen, comparing them, and helping you to select your favorites.  We offer a full range of products from digital files, to books and albums, to wall art and gift prints.

There are sessions to fit every senior’s need.  If you want just a shorter session in the studio or local park, or if you want to go all out and drive all over the city for a few hours, we can accommodate your needs.  Call today to schedule your session.

So when you look back and wonder how those years went by so quickly, you’ll have beautiful portraits to help you remember these fleeting days.

Amway Grand Plaza Spring Wedding

Ben and Ashley’s Spring Wedding at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church & Amway Grand Plaza Hotel
Amway Grand Plaza Spring Wedding
April 29th was a beautiful day for a spring wedding at the Amway Grand Plaza in Grand Rapids Michigan!

Ashley and Ben gathered with their extended family at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church for a beautiful ceremony. Two families who have been friends for decades were formally united into one. Since Ben always had a special place in his heart for Ashley, his dreams came true the spring day she finally became his wife!

Following the ceremony was a grand celebration with a stunning reception. A gorgeous ice sculpture carved with two interlocking “C’s” showcased the Coleman name overlooking a colorful spread of tasty appetizers in the ballroom lobby.

The Ambassador Ballroom was decorated from top to bottom with beautiful bouquets from Modern Day Floral. A fairytale atmosphere was realized as a result of the bride and her mother’s creative vision.

Guests were thus directed to find their seats to greet the wedding wedding party upon their arrival. A a result, the live band kicked the night off with a song to welcome the new bride and groom. While the cake was being cut, guests oohed and ahhed over the decadent table full of various chocolates!

After the guests completed the five course meal, the live music became an all night affair, wooing guests to dance the night away. April 29th was a night to remember forever for the bride and groom as well as their guests. Watch the slideshow here to see more images from their beautiful wedding!

Sunnybrook Country Club Wedding

Samantha and Colson had their Sunnybrook Country Club and Messiah Christian Reformed Church for their winter wedding earlier this month.  I was so honored when Samantha asked me to photograph her wedding.  I have photographed both of Samantha’s sisters’ weddings, and I love their family!

Samantha and her bridesmaids started out the morning by getting ready at Samantha’s house.  After Samantha was dressed and ready, Colson met her at the house for their first look.  I love to photograph the first look between a bride and groom!  It is such a special time.

We then drove over to Sunnybrook Country Club to do all the wedding portraits by the golf course.  Luckily, it was before we had the cold, cold temperatures and snow we received in December!  But, it was still a chilly day outside for portraits!  The wedding party and family members all took turns going in and out for their turn at portraits.  We started out with the bride and groom, then moved on to the bridesmaids.  When the bridesmaids went inside to warm up, the groomsmen took their turn, and we followed up with the family portraits.

Next was on to the church for the evening ceremony.  Samantha’s dad started the ceremony by announcing the bride in with a trumpet solo.  The beautiful ceremony ended with the guests singing “My Friends May you Grow in Grace” while holding hands and joining in worship.

After the ceremony, we headed back to Sunnybrook Country Club for the reception.  The food was fabulous, and the party was festive. The friends and family kept the dance floor hopping all night long.  Congratulations to Samantha and Colson as you start your new lives together as husband and wife.  God bless your marriage!  Make sure you check out the slideshow here to view more images from their day!

Western Michigan University Wedding

Kanley Chapel was the perfect location for Jake and Elizabeth’s Western Michigan University wedding.  The chapel was the same location that Elizabeth’s parents were married years ago.

The weather this fall has been absolutely beautiful. Jake and Elizabeth’s wedding day was no different.  With sunshine in the sky, a pleasant breeze filled the air.

After the wedding party put the finishing touches on their preparations, we started out with a few wedding party portraits before the ceremony.  Jake and Elizabeth’s family and friends watched them say I do and then we finished up the family portraits.  We spent a little time on Western Michigan University’s campus before we headed into Kalamazoo for the reception at Niko’s Landing.

Niko’s landing is located right on the Kalamazoo river.  After the wedding party arrived, we were able to take more pictures down by the river.  (Avoiding the goose poo was not an easy task!)

While the guests enjoyed cocktail hour, Jake and Elizabeth spent some time creating beautiful wedding portraits that will become their cherished heirlooms.  With the sun lower in the sky, the lighting was gorgeous for their bridal portraits.  We took a little walk that lead to another opening of the river.  This walkway was one of my favorite places of the afternoon to photograph them!

After spending time with bride and groom portraits, we headed inside to continue the wedding night festivities.  The dinner that Niko’s landing prepared was fabulous.  Jake and Elizabeth shared their first dance, and then the parents had their chance at the dance with their children.

We were able to slip outside at the twilight hour to get one more portrait along the river.  Twilight hour is my favorite time of night.  It is the time of night when the sun is gone, before the sky goes black.  The sky appears as a deep blue.  It makes for a beautiful color sky in the portrait.

Make sure to congratulate Jake and Elizabeth then make sure to watch their slideshow here!
